OCTOBER 2016 Happy October everyone. Beneath the noise of the beast, where I reside most of the time, my favorite season is in full swing with exciting developments to report. First, I’ll be headlining a show, A NIGHT OF STORIED MUSIC at le Poisson Rouge on November 13th, debuting many original songs I’ve never performed live. This will be a very exciting evening for me, an unveiling of what I’m calling the ‘punk cabaret’ show. It’s my first NYC performance since I played the Bowery Electric and Joe’s Pub in 2010: we sold out both shows and this time had to book a larger venue, so let’s pack the house for a great night! I can’t wait to serenade my NYC friends and family once again, and am honored to have a band of brilliant musicians supporting; Gail Ann Dorsey on bass, Bette Sussman on keys, Ava Mendoza on guitar, and Barbara Merjan on drums. Songstress Eszter Balint and her band will open, and she'll be joining me on stage with her violin for several songs. The luminous Tammy Faye Starlight and I will duet on a song, and I have another special surprise guest joining. Delphine Blue, NYC’s favorite alternative DJ will be setting the mood. Another great thrill for me about this show; my two pals from our all-girl band the Bloods -- Kathy Rey and Brenda Alderman -- will be joining me for the best of the very few songs our band ever recorded. Can’t wait! If you’re in NYC and want to experience a bit of magic, we'll do our best to provide.
NEXT UP: How about a musical SERIES about wild girls?
Too radical, Netflix? I've been working on a series as creator/writer/ director with a fantastic team. A few clues: Comedy. Punk. Girls girls girls. Music. LGBTQ. Ancient baby boomers mixing it up with Millennials! All that you long for and are not seeing in shows like: Vinyl, Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll, Roadies, Flight of the Concords, The Mighty Boosh, The Get Down, etc etc, you will find in this show. It’s a lollapalooza for real. Just ask this gorgeous creature! Stay tuned here for developments. Speaking of The Get Down, I’m praying it doesn’t get cancelled. It’s the best show streaming on Netflix, incredibly smart in its style (despite the melodrama) and faithful to the rise of hip hop in the wasteland that was 1970s New York. Not to mention it’s jaw-droppingly gorgeous to behold. |
And lastly, a quick note about our current saison en enfer.
“This is RAPE CULTURE — the cultural conditioning of men and boys
to feel entitled to treat women as objects.”

Yep, Trump’s vicious performance at the 2nd debate was all about rape culture. We watched that vile man stalk his female opponent, listened to repeated assertions from him that ‘locker room talk’ is okay, that verbal violence against women is justifiable when, in fact, it’s exactly what reinforces the idea cowardly men hang on to like hounds on a steak bone. We all know only cowardly men abuse women. They abuse women because they’re threatened women won’t want to sleep with them/ take orders from them. And the only dominance they have left ‘one on one’ is physical, emotional, social or verbal abuse.
I felt waves of discomfort watching that degenerate try to physically intimidate Hillary during the second debate. His face squinched in petulant rage, he circled her, stalked her. His abusive body language felt as if, had she uttered some trigger to unleash a complete meltdown, he actually would have struck her. How dare a woman threaten his superiority! I know exactly how this aggressive intimidation tactic feels, having been on the receiving end. I wrestle with PTSD due to sexual assaults I underwent as a child and as an adult, and nothing can kick up the unease more intensely than watching a broadcast of such an important woman on the international stage being physically threatened by a racist, xenophobic, misogynist and bully (who happens to be running for POTUS). In response to the bully (and his claims of assaulting women, caught on tape), Kelly Oxford posted a message on Twitter asking women to tweet their first assaults.

Back to the debate; as the beast stalked Hillary, I flashed back to an unhinged music business manager pacing around me in a tight circle, verbally raging, his fists balled because he felt I had too much influence over ‘his’ artist and he wanted me to disappear. He was trying to pressure the female artist into signing a ‘sunset’ clause; a notorious binding agreement that gives the manager a sizeable chunk of an artist’s income for life. The smart artist didn’t sign, and when the manager came for me, it looked much like the 2nd debate.
Trump will lose this election. Once the dust has cleared and our new POTUS is seated, if the FBI doesn’t prosecute that beast for crimes against the American people (colluding with WikiLeaks and the Kremlin to attack an American politician, for starters), I will lose all faith in American government. Not that I have much to begin with but there are exceptions, and I always hope we’ll go high, that the exceptions will lead our national discourse, not this insane lowlife. How long will it take, how much work for us to rise as a people after the disgrace of this election season and cleanse ourselves of this beast the Republicans have created and supported? He has dragged our country down farther than we could ever have imagined.
On November 8th, we will and we MUST show the world that the majority of Americans are not the haters this man represents... and then, we'll begin the hard work of wiping up after him and his lowlife party.
Hope to see you in NYC on November 13th for stories you won’t hear anywhere else, set to music... and a victory beat to dance to.
